As has been hinted at / pointed out, many of the so-called kernel instability problems are really driver problems, and specifically video driver problems. On a T42 (ATI Radeon 9600, Mandriva 2008.1/2.6.24), 3-D video acceleration doesn't work at all, and in fact hangs the system every time. ACPI is still buggy as well.
