Greetings,

finally managed to snatch a new T60p at a reasonable price. Manufactured in=
=20
2006 but left in some obscure dealer's stock until last month I got it with=
=20
full 3 year on-site service until 2012.

Which I have had to use twice now, because the machine runs unstable. Playi=
ng=20
3d-games in Windows makes the machine freeze hard after 20 minutes or so.=20
Sometimes, somtimes not. When it shut down, it wouldn't start Linux, unable=
 to=20
load the RAM-disk. Leaving it a lone for 15minutes returns everything back =
to=20
normal. Sometimes the machine completely freezes, particularly when I load=
=20
graphics in gimp or start google earth. However, this has only happened und=
er=20
Ubuntu so far, not under Mnadriva which I run on a separate partition. Trie=
d=20
installing new radeon drivers from git under Ubuntu, but the problem=20
persisted.

Specs: 2,16 GHZ Core Duo T2500, 3GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Mobility FireGL V5200

At first the tech support replaced the fan (which ran normally, but what do=
 I=20
know) and I had to open a new ticket 2 hours later when the problem persist=
ed.=20
Today the tech guy replaced the mainboard - and the problem got worse. Just=
=20
played a round of Wolfenstein under Linux and the machine shut down due to =
a=20
critical temperature reached error with GPU reaching 128=C2=B0. I immediate=
ly=20
restarted the machine and read 105=C2=B0 at /proc/acpi/ibm/thermal, so the =
shutdown=20
was a good idea, probably.

The technician will come back some time this week to replace the touchpad=20
bezel since he screwed up 2 threads upon reassembly. I wonder whether askin=
g=20
him to put fresh heat sink paste onto the GPU makes the real difference or=
=20
whether I should open a new ticket and ask for a replacement of the GPU boa=
rd.

What is your experience with a T60p with regard to thermal problems? My GPU=
=20
never runs colder than 75=C2=B0 and I can't say whether this is normal or n=
ot. The=20
current state of affairs is unacceptable and I wonder what needs to be done=
 to=20
have a reliable notebook for the next three years.
