Dear All,

Just a quick update on this rather old thread. My warranty was about to 
run out (just before 3 years), and so I sent the machine in for service.
Lenovo were surprisingly helpful, and they replaced the "Planar board" 
(motherboard, I presume). Since when, it has been absolutely solid.

So thanks for the recommendation of getting the hardware serviced if you 
  see unexplained hangs.

Incidentally, Lenovo's current service policy is that you don't ship the 
battery, psu, the cdrom, or the hard-disk to them - this mostlhy saves 
weight, but it means that there is never an issue with "unsupported OS".
