With the madwifi driver and several Netgear cards, I got ~3 MB/s to my
Linksys WRT54GS. The wireless in my X61 (IWL 4965) is a bit slower,
like 2,5-2,8 MB/s in the same environment.

It sounds like your 2 computers share the wireless connection. I don't
know if they share the bandwidth in this case.
