I used a 770z for years with a PCMCIA modem on dialup. No problems.
Unfortunately, support for PCMCIA modems seems to be decreasing in
the newer Linux distros, and I guess that's understandable. Soon, it'll
be hard to find ISPs that even offer dialup.

Try something like Damn Small Linux or Puppy Linux. FC10 and Mandriva 2009.0
are a bit heavy for the 770z anyhow.
