Well,

I am one of those 61-owners.  Although I own a X61 Tablet, running 
gentoo-testing with kde 3.5.10.  I came to the point where I wanted to 
switch back to stable quite often, but well, I chose once and now I 
gotta live with it.
So actually, gentoo runs very smooth, using the before mentioned 
thinkpad-sources from the jokey-overlay all the extras are there.  So if 
you want to give it a shot - do it.  I'm living with it since 1.5 years 
and I love my system ;)
