Well, Ubuntu 9.04 is pretty good; I also like Mandriva.

Most distros come on a live-cd now, so you can play with a few and see
what you like. (note that you may not get the proprietary driver
supported until you install; also you can change from KDE<->Gnome very
easily once the system is installed.)

If you want something simple, pick a common distro
(Ubuntu,Mandriva,Suse,Fedora,Debian,Gentoo) as you are more likely to
find someone here (or threads on google) who can support it.

Best wishes,

Richard

P.S. If you want to use KDE 3.5, it's still there, but only with Debian.
My personal thoughts are that KDE 4.x still isn't really ready so I'm
using Gnome on new installs for friends, and I've held my own
desktop/laptop back to last year's distros - Mandriva 2009.0 and Ubuntu
Hardy until KDE 4.3 appears. XFCE is also becoming rather a good
lightweight option.

P.P.S. If you don't play 3D games, you may well find that the vesa or nv
driver is quite adequate for you, and it will save you some proprietary
troubles. Nouveau isn't ready yet.
