Thanks, Mat. removing the CMOS battery did the trick. Along with
correcting Setup to boot from the right disk.

If anyone else is trying this for the first time, IBM/Lenovo's movies
showing you how to remove etc. hardware are at

The T42p is a bit different in small ways, but you can figure it out.
