Yes, the original Core (and Core Duo) supported only 32-bit mode.
Core 2 Duo has been through 2 generations; later T60, and T61 had the 
original one (no SSE4). Recent Core 2 should support SSE4.1 (including 
Core 2 Solo, probably not available in thinkpad).
