You have a Radeon 9000 with the high-res screen, i have the older
model with a 7500 and the classic 1024x768 screen. Your Thinkpad
should be faster.

That's the only difference i see. My ubuntu auto-defaults to XAA.

There are multiple reports and it affects a wide range of radeons.

The magic line is:

Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"'

and belongs to the Section "Device".
