These winmodems used to work with the i386 kernels until Ubuntu 7.04 or so. But the ltmodem driver does not work with recent kernels it seems and the martian driver is still buggy in my experience. So in short, yes and no. If you do not want to lose time, buy a pcmcia card, as suggested by an other poster.
