I've heard lots of different reason to abandon the thinkpad series, but they
barely revolve around the compability to linux, I have no problem whatsoever
on my T400, hardware works out of the box, suspend and hibernate work fine on
openSUSE and Arch (bought Oct. 2008, never had a problem), so going with stock
Intel platform should be fine.

What you could worry about is the degrading quality of the overall system
though, but I can't tell about that, my system feels as good as expected.
