Let me make a guess, confirmed by my own tests [on an X60]:
The BIOS is doing a hotplug removal of the USB device.

Repeated presses of Fn-F5 (the radio key) cycle between:
   All off
   Just Wifi
   Just BT
   Both

If the BT is off, the USB device does not show up in lsusb.
When it is back on, it reappears.

(I suspect you might find that the wireless-disable switch, if present, 
does the same, and that rfkill can maybe do this too).
