Thanks for the hint but when I remove "splash" the bootsplash disappears completely. What I'd like to have is a normal colored bootsplash.

Actually I have the following in menu.lst:

title           Ubuntu 10.10, kernel 2.6.35-25-generic (recovery mode)
uuid            3df77956-9fb8-4faf-b61f-62332003633d
kernel          /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-25-generic root=UUID=3df77956-9fb8-4faf-b61f-62332003633d ro single splash video=uvesafb:mode_option=1024x768-24
initrd          /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-25-generic
