I haven't yet had the pleasure of using an X1, but I'm pleased to report
that the T420 works quite well under Debian stable with two exceptions:

1) You'll need to install a newer X.org stack from squeeze-backports.

2) You'll need to run a 3.0.x kernel to avoid hard locks.

Both of those are quite easy to do, though, and apart from that I've had
a great time using Linux on my T420.

The T420s should (emphasis on "should") be the same, as the guts of the
machine are pretty much identical.

Oh, and avoid Optimus.  It can be beaten into submission on Linux, but
unless you absolutely need it it's probably more trouble than it's
worth.
