I've had my X220 (4291-WJF) for less than a month. I've got Ubuntu
12.04 LTS on it. No freezes/crashes yet.

The only problem I've got is that on resume I get a 10 second pause
accompanied by some error message:

ata1: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=3D0)
  ata1: COMRESET failed (errno=3D-16)

I don't know if this is relevant, but I've put my old Intel X25-M G2 SSD
in it, so it has an old 32-bit Ubuntu install, and I'm using a PAE
kernel to make use of all 8 gigs of RAM (upgraded from stock 2 GB on
this model).

If something has not yet gone wrong then it would ultimately have been
beneficial for it to go wrong.
