When booting in UEFI mode with CSM disabled, you get a white on black=
=93high res=94 Lenovo logo (not the old low-res Thinkpad logo). But that= 9;s
unrelated to secure boot beeing enabled or not.

I did some more digging...

I can c= onfirm the following workaround allows full brightness control:
<= br>
nox2apic kernel param

AND

In Device section of xorg.conf:

Opt= ion "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=3D1"

It seems to be a problem with using 64 bit= , a vm, and discrete graphics (all of which I need).

I still have other problems with suspend/re= sume that I need to look into now...

I'm pretty sure I once tried using my T410 with a VGA cable attached to my dockstation, and it worked just fine --- but that was a while

It's possible that perhaps your minidock is faulty; do you have a

In any case, as far as I know, no special software or configuration

We usually prefer that to integers for any boolean variable, and keeping the module_param bool has the advantage that you can use the 'Y' or 'N' aliases instead of '0' or '1'. I've seen something vaguely similar with ubuntu 12.4 LTS on a T520. I posted here about it: http://marc.info/?l=linux-thinkpad&m=133897083013428&w=2 I never found out what the problem was, I use a wired connection at home to get around the problem and haven't seen the problem reccur in outside networks. I also previously had a problem with ipw2200 repeatedly disconnecting, on a t43P running ubutu, which I solved by reflashing my router (linksys 54G) from DD-WRT to Tomato: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/607064 In both cases, I think the problem started to occur after an update to the kernel. -- Steven J. On my T61p I started having similar sounds also when muting and unmuting (about 3 month ago when upgrading to CentOS 6.4) - but T61 units have software mixer buttons. pwm1_enable =3D=3D 0
fan speed: 3= 800rpm

pwm1_enable =3D=3D 1
fan speed: 3100rpm to 0 depending on value in pwm (255 to 0)

The two common defects that cause this are: (1) dirt, and (2) cracked thermal interface. (2) is far more serious, a recurring problem on thinkpads (especially if you ever handle it in any way that causes even minute flexes of the mainboard, such as holding it with just one hand) and you must repair it as it slowly damages it for good. OTOH, both are relatively simple repairs. To repair (2), you need to remove the heatsinks, remove all the old thermal compounds, and replace them with an extremely high performance compound (Arctic Silver 5 is one I can recommend, but others that are medium to high-viscosity, *non* reactive, *non* conductive _and_ as good or better at thermal conducitivty will also work). To repair (1), remove the keyboard and blow the lint away, hold the fan stopped while at it as it is not a good idea to spin it at extreme speed, and that can easily happen while blowing the lint away with compressed air. -- "One disk to rule them all, One disk to find them. I can second this. I did this procedure on my T400 which went into themal shutdown every time I launched a VM. The procedure is well documented by Lenovo and was at least for me a success, the old thermal grease was very dry and gone on one corner of the CPU, that corner also was of a different tint, I assume to the bad thermal bridge to the fan. > To repair (1), remove the keyboard and blow the lint away, hold the fan > stopped while at it as it is not a good idea to spin it at extreme speed, > and that can easily happen while blowing the lint away with compressed air. Last time there was some sort of sale going on the website and they gave me the same discount for the phone order. > Let me start with this question: What are the differences among the T, > L, W and Edge series? I'll also second the suggestion of thinkwiki.org, it will answer a lot of this sort of question. Off the top of my head... The T-series are what I've always got, and they've always been the ruggedest thinkpads. There is no such thing as a ruggedized thinkpad, AFAIK, but stock T-series thinkpads pass a large chunk of the standard semi-ruggedized laptop tests. I believe the T stands for Transportable. They're made for road warriors, people who will be constantly moving around with them. They're a little lighter, typically have slightly less powerful specs than the R and W series, and have historically had certain extra toughness features added in (like a "roll cage" frame built inside the case). Note: It's hard to say which of these features are available in any given model, I vaguely remember reading about certain of the toughness features that were later added to all models. R stands for desktop Replacement, for a laptop that will spend most of its life doing the same thing as a desktop, i.e. sitting on your desk, but will occasionally be moved around. They're typically heavier, a bit more powerful, a bit less tough. W is (relatively) new and stands for Workstation. They're like the R only more so - much heavier, much better CPU and etc. They were originally designed for as graphics workstations. They don't make a 17" W-series anymore, but there used to be one that had an extra pop-out 10" screen as somewhere to drag your Photoshop tools palette :-). > Depending on the responses to the above question, I'm leaning toward > the T or W series. Especially with linux, be wary of bleeding edge features. Be especially wary of Nvidia. I have a t520 with nvidia optimus. Of course we all know nvidia's driver support for linux sucks. What I didn't realize was that the thinkpad's external monitor support depends completely on the nvidia hardware. So I haven't been able to drive my shiny new dell 24" monitor. I bought some Arctic Silver, replaced the old thermal glue on the cpu, chipset, and heatpipe, and rebuilt it -- it didn't make much difference I think. I tried both a very thin layer and a slightly thicker layer as well. Maybe a slight improvement but I still have to be very careful with cpu utilisation to avoid reboots. This laptop has been through hell and is nearly 4 years old so quite likely the original thermal compound was not working as well as it should. I also tried blowing out the dust -- there actually wasn't that much. The airflow can be easily felt around the grilles. The heatsink doesn't seem that hot either, certainly not anywhere near the temperature reported by the core2duo. It seems like either the heatpipe has a problem (unlikely) or the fan isn't going fast enough. It doesn't matter which since the replacement part is a heatpipe/heatsink/fan combo unit and I've got a cheap one on order from Hong Kong now. This probably not the best source of spare parts but I guess this laptop isn't going to last a whole lot longer now... :) On Sun, Apr 28, 2013 at 3:42 PM, Bill Hudacek wrote: > Behavior is consistent, but his results and mine don't agree. I have a w500, so this may be apples and oranges. =A0If not, I'd be looking at a hardware problem with those numbers.

This is consistent with the docs. =A0You can find an online version here:
