Thanks for the help guys.

I bought some Arctic Silver, replaced the old thermal glue on the cpu,
chipset, and heatpipe, and rebuilt it -- it didn't make much difference I
think. I tried both a very thin layer and a slightly thicker layer as
well. Maybe a slight improvement but I still have to be very careful with
cpu utilisation to avoid reboots. This laptop has been through hell and is
nearly 4 years old so quite likely the original thermal compound was not
working as well as it should.

I also tried blowing out the dust -- there actually wasn't that much. The
airflow can be easily felt around the grilles. The heatsink doesn't seem
that hot either, certainly not anywhere near the temperature reported by
the core2duo.

It seems like either the heatpipe has a problem (unlikely) or the fan isn't
going fast enough. It doesn't matter which since the replacement part is a
heatpipe/heatsink/fan combo unit and I've got a cheap one on order from
Hong Kong now. This probably not the best source of spare parts but I
guess this laptop isn't going to last a whole lot longer now... :)
