Hi Uwe,

Yes, and indeed I have done so with great success.

Pretty much any of the thinkpads that pre-date UEFI are amenable to a 
straight swap of the hard disk - if it's Linux, you can even swap your 
disk between various thinkpads, and they will all boot just fine from 
it. The "hardest" part is simply the act of unscrewing the drive, which 
takes about 5 minutes.

In my experience, if the laptop uses an SATA removable drive, this is 
likely to just work.
