I have a ThinkPad W510 that is aging mostly gracefully, but with one major = annoyance: about a month or 2 ago, its tray for optical discs (CD, DVD, &qu= ot;multi") started opening/ejecting randomly. It does not auto-open at= all when the W510 is suspended or powered off, but will do it

* just about any time when the W510 is on.

* whether or not a disc is in the tray.

* even during disc play, though auto-eject seems less frequent while in use= than auto-open while not in use. A typical scenario is: I put a disc in th= e tray, close it, and begin play (typically with VLC, though I'm guessi= ng that does not matter). The tray will auto-eject a few times before "= ;settling down" and allowing me to play the full disc.

Some additional details:

1. Nothing on Lenovo's page=3D'Troubleshooting CD and DVD drive iss= ues - ThinkPad'[1] matches this problem.

2. I suspect this is a hardware problem, but FWIW,

2.1. I'm running Debian 8 (via LMDE) up-to-date.

2.2. This behavior has persisted through at least one reboot.

3. Sometimes the tray will re-open as soon as I close it, sometimes it will= stay closed for awhile before re-ejecting.

4. Disc play seems unaffected, except for the auto-eject. I.e., I have not = noticed any other problems reading or writing discs except for the occasion= al apparently-DRM-related read failure.

How to fix or further debug?

Your assistance is appreciated, Tom Roche <Tom_Roche@pobox.com>

The black screen means that it is stuck in rhgb quiet mode to make it pretty but is hiding quietly the real problem. In the grub2 edit of a boot line remove rhgb and quiet and try a reboot again. It should stop at a certain point which will help pinpoint the error. [My guess with the T430 is that it is one of the BIOS update issues. It could also be a problem with an nvidia extra chipset in some of the units when it is in a docking unit.] > > I tried the rescue option, hung also (by hung, I mean a completely black > > screen, no way to get a response). > > > > I did try the grub emergency boot, but I don't know enough about SL > > to do anything with that. > > > > Just another data point for those who might be interested > > > > Carl Friedberg > > www.comets.com > > carl.friedberg@comets.com > > http://about.me/carl.friedberg > > > > From: owner-scientific-linux-users@listserv.fnal.gov > [mailto:owner-scientific-linux-users@listserv.fnal.gov] On Behalf Of > Thompson, Herb > Sent: Sunday, February 07, 2016 5:51 PM > To: SCIENTIFIC-LINUX-USERS@FNAL.GOV > Subject: SL 7.2 - Gnome 3.14 - gnome-terminal - titles > > > > FYI for those who might be affected: 7.2 comes with an upgrade to Gnome 3= .14 > which, as is usually the case for Gnome upgrades, results on the loss of > some features present in the previous version. The first has a SSD Samsung 840 250 Giga the second the smaller 120 Giga. (Changing to a SSD was the largest performance boost I have seen in the last years.) Both laptops I use with Kubuntu 10.04, and the jfs file system. However I had to compile 3.7 kernel in order to use TRIM for jfs, since in earlier kernel versions this feature was not supported. The SSD on the smaller machine failed with a serious error and is now useless. I wounder if it has to do with the trim operation since I have read stories about data loss with trim enabled, but then the SSD on the other machine is fine. So for the moment I switched back to the old hard disk and I am back *from* the future, and that is why I will get a new SSD. I presume I have to upgrade Kubuntu, so the question is: is 14.04 enough or do I need a more modern kernel even. Is trim save? How often shall I run it, on every boot, once a week? Comments are very well come. Is trim save? How often shall I > run it, on every boot, once a week? While using TRIM can make a difference. IF your hard-disk is full enough, TRIM won't help. IOW the SSD has to have enough extra space of its own in order to provide good performance when it's "full". For this reason, I stopped worrying about TRIM (actually I stopped worrying about it right around the time it started to be somewhat usable without jumping through too many hoops). IOW, I now use my SSDs without any special configuration and I haven't noticed any performance issue (and I think we should *expect* the performance to be good in such a situation). Stefan PS: My SSDs include an old 120GB Samsung, a Samsung 840 of some sort, and a 240GB Mushkin.
