There has been for quite a while.  My 4th Gen X1 Carbon from 2016 has
soldered RAM.  To make it even worse, the 16GB option was only available
with the most expensive CPU option.

Other parts of it is also far more difficult to replace than previous
models. You have to disassemble everything to replace the keyboard for
example, since it is only accessible from the bottom.  Did I mention
that the keyboard quality sucks?  I am now on my third, and the arrow up
key is falling off and the Alt key has a hole in the black paint.

I liked the X301 it replaced much better. Extremely easy to fix, and
rock solid. I still got it with the original keyboard, and it is almost
as new.  With a much better key feeling too.

And while I'm ranting about the new Thinkpads: What is this crazy
ethernet dongle idea? If you can't fit an RJ45 connector, then you are
not qualified to design a business laptop.  Sorry.  Thin?  Why? Who
cares?  It's not that thin anyway.
