Well mostly correct.  It is actually a self-sustaining DSP chip.  In
otherwords, once you download the firmware, the modem/sound chip is
self sustaining entity and unlike a typical WinModem does not require
CPU power nor additional software to operate.

The problem with Linux is loading the firmware correctly and then
interfacing the chip :(
