lower-res modes on 13.7" screen

Anybody using lower-resolution modes on the 13.7" (1280x1024) screen
successfully?  I added this to my XF86Config:

    Modeline "640x480"  25.175  640  664  760  800 480 491 493 525

I can start my X server at 640x480 and nothing shows up (the screen is
black).  But if I press Fn-F8, then the X cursor appears and
everything's fine.  (And all the pixels are doubled, which is good.)
I'm not sure why I have to press Fn-F8 to make anything show up.
Pressing it at the wrong time tends to make the screen go into
Psycho-color-shifting mode (henceforth to be known as PCS mode).
