Thanks to Jaroslav Kysela of the ALSA team, I now have running sound. It might
work for other distros as well, here is what he told me:
The whole problem is that the ALSA modules in SuSE 6.3 are compiled with
the ISA PnP support and the snd-card-cs4236 module is looking for ISA PnP
cards only by default. Some notebooks have the ISA PnP feature disabled
for their sound chips. If you want to force the non-PnP detection, you
should use the 'snd_isapnp=0' option (described in the INSTALL file).
