[ltp] X on thinkpad 760EL/ELD

hi gang
i've got a thinkpad model 9547 U4H, which according to IBM's page
is a 760EL/ELD.
i have two questions:
1. when i bring up the X server, it seems to think that the screen is a bit
bigger than the physical screen i.e. the tops of windows are just off the
screen.
the big problem with this is that when i iconify windows i can't see the
icon, i think because the icon is placed somewhere off the screen, and of
course i can't access that window any more
2. i've installed RH 6.0, and running startx brings up the gimp system. i'd
rather use a dumb (and fast) window manager like twm, but i can't figure
out how to kill gimp but leave x running. suggestions?
any help would be appreciated.
