This is discussed in the IBM "TP600E - Guide to installing Red Hat 6.0
Linux" document which can be found at:

The trick is to load the driver later in the boot sequence, by using a
script in /etc/rc.d/init.d. Although the document is specifically for RH
6.0, I've had no trouble adapting the techniques to Caldera OpenLinux 2.3.
