| Question: can I count on everyone having (by default at least)
| the "wheel" group defined on their system? What is the meaning
| of "wheel" and what is the essential function of the "wheel"
| group?
Historically, the su command would only allow a user to become root if
he was in the wheel group. However, due to Richard Stallman's insanity,
the GNU su command (used on Linux) does not AFAIK enforce this. As far
as I know, wheel doesn't serve any particular purpose under Linux. Not
Redhat Linux, anyway.
It seems likely that every Linux distribution will have a wheel group.
That doesn't mean that wheel is the right group for /dev/thinkpad.
