X windows performance problem

Although X runs on my Thinkpad 770Z, it is very slow at repainting the
screen when doing various things.  For example if I try to move an xterm
window to a different location on the screen, the window repaints very
slowly as it is being moved.  In addition, scrolling large amounts of text
in an xterm is very slow.  I am guessing it is something simple that I need
to fix, but would appreciate any advice.
