Hi folks,
First of all I would like to thank all of you who sent
a mail expressing their desire and need for MWave
support. Below is a copy of the mail that I sent to
Keith. As I mentioned in the mail to him I will continue
to collect names and send them to him as appropriate.
I have also posted a call for signees to the following
news groups in an attempt to reach as many Linux/MWave
afflicted users as possible:
comp.os.linux.portable
comp.os.linux.setup
comp.os.linux.misc
comp.sys.laptops

Keith,
After your mail of Tue., 20 Jul. 1999 regarding MWave
support for IBM's ThinkPads, I decided to put out
a call to all of the members of the linux-thinkpad
mailing list, whose home is located on my company's
web server (see below for a link to my ThinkPad
page) and which currently has more than 200 members.
On Thu, 20 Jul 1999 I asked them if they would be
interested in having their names put on a petition
to be sent to you requesting IBM to provide MWave
support for the Linux platform.
Although our exchange of mails was primarily directed
towards ACP Modem support various petitioners also
mentioned their desire for MWave sound support, and
MWave support for desktop systems.
IBM has already expressed their commitment to the Linux
platform, and I can only hope that this commitment extends
to MWave for which no alternative solutions exist and
for which there seems to be very little in the way of
"open" documentation.
I was also asked to draw your attention to the following
URL http://www.e-oasis.com/linux-tp.html, which contains
an impressive list of peoples configurations for ThinkPads
and covers almost every ThinkPad model. Kevin Barker
maintains a list of sites dedicated to supporting
Linux on laptops and currently has 58 links to sites
for IBM ThinkPads, the main site can be found at
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/.
I strongly believe that this list of names is just the
tip of the iceberg, I know that my set of pages for
the 770X averages at about 2000 hits a week, so there
is obviously a massive interest in Linux on IBM's
ThinkPad systems.
Having received more than 70 names in less than 24 hours
I am sending you the list now, and as more mails come
I will collect them and forward them on to you.
I sincerely hope that IBM will either provide this
support for the Linux community, and look forward to
IBM's response to this petition.
Yours sincerely,
William (Bill) Mair.

P.S. I have kept all of the mails that were sent to me,
and if required can forward them to you.
The following list contains the names and mail addresses
of those people who expressed their desire for the above
support.

I hope that the content is inline with all of your wishes,
and that it helps get the point across to IBM management that
there is a real need for this support.
I will post IBM's response to the list when I get one.
Once again, thanks to allof you who took the time to respond
to my intial posting, and for those of you who didn't well
I'm still collecting names ;-).
Bill.
