"grep Depth XF86Config" finds a couple, but then what? :-)
Seriously folks, I've fixed the problem. Someone on DalNet #linux
suggested I run Xconfigurator and just don't select any 8bpp modes. I Did
this, and it works great.
PCMCIA networking is my next challenge...
