sound on the 770z

| After many hours of devotion to this subject, all I can get is 8 bit
| soundblaster going from the built in 2.2.7 kernel modules. This is OK
| for .au files but quite lacks for mp3s. I see web pages that claim to
| have ALSA working on the 770x, but attempting to emulate or apply some
| variation thereof is not working for me.

Since you're using a 2.2 kernel, you should be able to use the kernel
sound drivers. Check out <http://www.baiti.net/~baiti/tp770x/sound.html>.

| Would anyone who has accomplished ALSA on the CS4236 (which I *think* is
| the chip in this thing) like to share all their relevant configuration
| information?

It's apparently a CS4239, which is supposedly register-compatible with
the CS4236, CS4232, and a several other CS423x-series. I bought OSS
and configured mine as a non-PNP CS4232 using numbers I got by looking
at the configuration under W98. It definitely sounds better now than it
did when it was configured as an 8-bit SB. Unfortunately it doesn't
work under WINE. :(
