[ltp] Alternative Operating System ?

Anyone tried Caldera's OpenLinux 2.3 on a ThinkPad?
BeOS?
Other OSs?

I'm looking for a stable, simple and practical OS!
Linux is desiderable for its stability but I've
impression it's not
suitable for portables...  too many technical problems
(if it's not completely due to IBM's support lack... )

Does IBM really NEED a petition for a Linux support on
ThinkPads??? 
Or it isn't clear that Microsoft plays upon
ignorance??
Or Linux is mainly for server purposes?

IBM gave up its excellent OS/2 Warp?
IBM resigned upon Bill Gates's Mars Attack?
