Fixed the problem by making rescue disks and making partitions in fdisk,
*forcing* it to write to 1295 cylinders. no pretty, but it seems to be
working.
I'll be interested if other 10GB 600E owners have the same deal - well
at least here's your solution if you want that extra 25% of space.
