Hmmm, could be your computer is trying to resolv a name though the dns......
for somthing, trying changing your nsswitch.conf to just use files. And
test if that is faster, if it is, try pinging, if ping works rename dns
otherwise disable it... do this in a RC script after networking.
Other trick for a fast boot and easier is.
get the names of all the hosts your computer needs to boot, (anything you
nfs to mailservers etc) bang them in /etc/hosts and make your nsswitch.conf
user files and hosts...... (I use this one)
