IBM To Offer Linux On ThinkPads

IBM consummated Wednesday what it says it hopes will be a long and happy
marriage between its ThinkPad line of mobile computers and the Linux operating
system.


IBM's ThinkPad 600E becomes the first mobile computer certified by Red Hat
Software to run its Red Hat Linux 6.0 operating system.


By the end of the year, IBM plans to announce compatibility with additional
Linux distributors, including Caldera Systems, TurboLinux, and SuSe, to run on a
wider spectrum of ThinkPad models, said Tim Eades, customer-segment marketing
manager for the worldwide ThinkPad brand.


Eades said Red Hat was the first Linux company chosen for compatibility with
ThinkPad brand because Red Hat was the first Linux company to approach IBM about
such a relationship. The 600E was chosen as the first in the ThinkPad line to
receive Linux compatibility because of the notebook's success in the areas of
power and performance since its introduction in January of this year, Eades
said.


The agreement between IBM and Red Hat gives a lot of credibility to Linux, said
John Dunkle, president of Workgroup Strategic Services, a Portsmouth, N.H.-based
consulting company. IBM, in turn, benefits by being able to offer its customers
an alternative to Microsoft. "IBM has done a good job of providing options in
other areas of its business -- its server group, for example. Why not provide
these options to the portable computing platforms as well," Dunkle said.
