As far as I know, the only way to determine if your parameters are
doing any good is to use hdparm -t /dev/hda  and get before and after
timings.

[root@localhost rskoss]# /sbin/hdparm -t /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  6.49 seconds =  9.86 MB/sec
[root@localhost rskoss]# 


As you can see, mine just sucks.
