Before this quickly degenerates into a massive me-too list, let me jump
in. :-)

The ThinkPad Linux preload recovery CD set is not available as a
stand-alone purchase. We did not (and probably still do not) expect there
would be enough demand for it to justify the effort involved with making
it a stand-alone product. As it is now, the recovery CD set is to be used
as a tool for recovering the preload image, perhaps on instruction from an
IBM HelpCenter support specialist. The recovery CD's are only intended for
use on the specific hardware configuration on which Linux is preloaded,
and so would require much additional testing (and possibily modification)
before it can be released for use on other models. There are also other
issues involved with making it a product that IBM could support (including
publications, HelpCenter training, etc.).

This isn't to say that we'd never do this. It's just that we'd need to
have a reasonable business case to justify the effort. If there appears to
be overwhelming demand (Bill, are you prepared to start another "list"?
:-)), I suspect that ThinkPad would consider doing it.
