[ltp] can't boot dos from lilo

Rebuilding my tp600e following a disc failure, I decided to do
without an ms-windows partition since I never use it.

So I booted the redhat6.1 CD-ROM, made three partitions, a big
linux native, a linux swap, and a fat16. The fat16 is for
      - the hibernation file
      - ps2.exe (and whatever else it needs to run - anyone know?)
      - only enough ms-dos to support the above

I finished the rh6.1 installation straightforwardly, I then booted
from an msdos floppy, and set up a minimal ms-dos partition using
     sys c:
This put 4 files on the partition. I set up lilo to boot from
linux or dos.

When I try to boot the dos partition, I get
     Loading dos

     Invalid system disk
Replace the disk, and then press any key

Any ideas? The dos partition (/dev/hda5) is in an "extended
partition", and it starts very near the end of the disc, at around
the 6 Gbyte mark. Is this a >1024 cyls problem? Is this how such
a problem would be diagnosed? Any work arounds?

regards,
Michael
