Bill Mair's petition has 562 names on it.
Let's guess that about 300 people would be willing to
pay about 25$ for the modem driver. Could we find
someone to write the driver with IBM's help under
NDA for a fee of 7500$ ?
Because of the aforementioned legal issues, at least
part of the driver will probably have to be distributed
as a binary. Perhaps the proprietary code could be
distributed as a library to which the rest of the
driver, open source of course, would be linked. The
open source part would contain as much of the kernel
interface stuff as possible.
