I use this commandline (770Z too):
/sbin/hdparm -u1 -W1 -c1 -m16 -d1 -S6 -A1 -K1 -k1 /dev/hda
The important option seems to be '-c1' to enable 32-bit I/O support.
With these options, I obtain the following timings :
# hdparm -t /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 6.53 seconds = 9.80 MB/sec
