I managed to resolve my problem. Classic case of not looking for the
most easiest answer. *whack*
It seems that some of the pcmcia components I'm using don't use the shared
irq option when requesting the irq, consequently, when I inserted my
usb ethernet adapter, nothing happened except for a bunch of useless error
messages and then I tried this again the other way around - with usb
device inserted and plugging in my pcmcia card later, and then I made
the observation that there was a bit of an irq contention in the logs -
my syslog messages told me that the irq was unavailable. I'll
probably need to verify things against the Linux PCMCIA Programmer's Guide and
the source...
Anyhows, it seems that IBM won't let you change the irq for your usb port
but I can tweak my pcmcia config to avoid using irq 11. Mental note,
must read docs - Debian's installation scripts seems to have made
me lazy.
[It's really annoying how the 1492 only has one pcmcia slot. :( ]
However, removing this usb eth adapter seems to make my 1492 crash but
that's another issue...
