Some months ago I had a similar problem with a thinkpad 770Z.
There was no IRQ nor address conflict.
I'd tried everything, like you, with no solution...
Then, by chance, I changed (in windows--ARGHH) the COM port from COM1 to
COM2 (also changing the address and irq, of course) using the thinkpad
configuration program.
After I reboot everything worked OK. The Linux recognized the /dev/ttyS1
and I could use the serial port.
Please do not ask me what happend... I just know it's working now...
