I was using the drivers from the standard kernel for quite some
time. I don't remember where I read it but somebody stated that ALSA is
required to get full duplex communications via SpeakFreely. I have tried
SpeakFreely with ALSA and it does indeed work full duplex. I have not
spent the time to 'downgrade' to the standard drivers and then try what
SpeakFreely can do with those.

What I can suggest based on the experience I made myself: Try the sound
drivers in the standard kernel first and only if that doesn't give you
all the capabilities you need, then try to switch to ALSA. ALSA is not
trivial to install and configure.
