Probably you haven't disabled the MWave stuff, in this case,
you should tell the BIOS to disable the MWave and to enable the
internal serial port, you can do
it with Thomas Hood's tpctl under Linux or using the ThinkPad
configurator windows
version, or with the DOS ThinkPad configurator ps2.exe :

c:\thinkpad\ps2 imodem disable (to disable the MWave stuff)
c:\thinkpad\ps2 serial enable (to enable the internal PCMCIA serial port)
c:\thinkpad\ps2 sera enable  (to enable the external serial port)
