  This is quite possible I think.  Don't forget that you're on an LCD panel
and you can't switch to just any resolution.  Try commenting out all
resolutions in the XF86Config file that you don't need (or are not
immediately using).  You could also see what attaching an external monitor on
the laptop does for the flicker.

There are possibly some bugs in that server, though.  However nothing
concrete or repeatable to go  on yet.

Also, I have no experience with xawt so I don't know what it does...
