[ltp] serial configuration on a thinkpad T20

i can't use minicom to dial out over a serial port, here's why:

#setserial -g /dev/ttyS*
/dev/ttyS0, UART: unknown, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
/dev/ttyS1, UART: unknown, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3	
/dev/ttyS2, UART: unknown, Port: 0x03e8, IRQ: 4
/dev/ttyS3, UART: unknown, Port: 0x02e8, IRQ: 3

the machine runs mandrake 7.0 with kernel version 2.2.15.

anyone know why UART would ever show up as unknown (or what valid settings
would be)?  to my knowledge, that's not a valid option for any serial
device.
