Burt later appends:
I found that the critical piece for me is the CONFIG_APM_ALLOW_INTS;
initial testing says it is the one out of the four that I need to be able
to resume. Secondary gain was learning how to build the kernel (nerve
wracking touch and go after I made a mistake -- I learned the
root=/dev/hdax option when booting from diskette!)
