[ltp] Lost Interrupt on TP 600X

I have been encountering the error,

	hda: lost interrupt

while attempting to back-up and/or restore the hard disk
on my TP 600X (Red Hat 6.1, kernel 2.2.12).  I am using an 
HP DAT drive with an Adaptec 1460 PCMCIA SCSI card.  The error 
appears when using tar or dump.  I have tried using two different 
hard disks, a 6 gb Travelstar and a 12 gb Travelstar, and the 
error has appeared with both.  It appears at different times 
during the backup or restore, but, once it appears, it's fatal
and the system can be brought back only by restarting with the
power switch.

I would appreciate any information or speculation as to what
might be the problem.
