[ltp] Thinkpad HD Question

Thnx again! My laptop will come with (its on its way here as we speak) 64
megs of RAM, of which I too am maxing out to 288 via some RAM that I had
already ordered and has come in. I found IBM's page for my model and it
turns out it doesn't have a empty bay, so now I'm wondering if rather then
merely adding another HD if I can replace it. My distro of choice is
Mandrake (for workstation uses, at least) and I plan on installing it on my
laptop once it gets in, shortly after which I plan on making a custom kernel
(latest, 2.4.7) and all that. Question about performance, I know that
anymore KDE 2.x.x or Gnome 1.4.x w/Nautilus can be quite slow on even 128
meg machines, hense my wanting to max it out - my CPU is a 266 mhz PII,
perfectly fast for my needs (which is why I bought it), so I'm wondering if
you use either of these environments and how do they perform for you? RAM,
like with Windows 2000 (I apologize for the comparison, but both seem RAM
hungry), seems make the most noticable difference.
Yet again, thnx - a most helpful mailing list :-),
