[ltp] XFree86-4.1.0 + KDE 2.2 on T22 ... very nice!

In the past, I've had problems with (what I believe to be) the X server
locking up my thinkpad. It seemed to happen maybe once a week and most often
when I was scrolling in a window. I have a friend with different model
thinkpad that had similar problems and I've read on various mailing lists of
others experiencing the same.

Well, I took the plunge and installed Red Hat 7.1, updated all errata RPMS
and then installed XFree86 and the newly released KDE 2.2. It took a little
while to resolve the dependencies, but once it was working... wow! I got a
huge performance increase along with (cross my fingers) a big jump in
stability.

I thought anyone else out there that may be experiencing problems with
XFree86-4.0.3 on a Red Hat system might be interested to know that this
combination works very nicely, but it does take a little work to get going.

I know not everyone here is a KDE user, but for those out there looking for
an upgrade, this is it. The install is kind of kludgy on Red Hat; in
particular the need ot update glibc. But once its in, it runs like a dream.

So, bottom line: If you are squeemish or a beginning user, you may want to
wait a little while for the official RH errata for XFree and KDE, but if you
have the experience and willingness to update, there's a real payoff.
